Niemcy i Rosjanie rozszarpujący Polskę na kawałki, by zabrać dla siebie najlepsze kąski i osadzić na tronie bezwolną marionetkę? To nie jest wcale nowa historia. Pierwszy rozbiór Polski nastąpił już w roku 1031. A jego motorem była zwyczajna, ludzka nienawiść.
Bolesław Chrobry jak nikt inny potrafił odbierać ludziom poczucie własnej wartości. Nawet jego ulubiony syn, Mieszko przez lata dwoił się i troił, by udowodnić, że zasługuje na uznanie ojca. I że jest w stanie godnie go reprezentować. Straceńcze misje, najniebezpieczniejsze kampanie… Zaglądał w oczy śmierci, byle usłyszeć od Bolesława dobre słowo. Nawet gdy Chrobry umarł, wciąż nie był w stanie wyjść z jego cienia.
Ponieważ zaś postanowił poprzestać na sławie ojca, której nikt nie mógł dorównać, a cóż dopiero ją przewyższyć, ani obywatelom nie wydawał się tak sławny, ani nieprzyjaciołom tak groźny – niemal dwa stulecia później wytykał Mieszkowi kronikarz Wincenty Kadłubek. I trafił prosto w najczulszy punkt młodego króla.
Przeklęty syn
Jeśli Mieszkowi brakowało akceptacji, to co dopiero Bezprymowi: pierworodnemu synowi władcy, którego odsunięto od dziedziczenia i pozbawiono jakichkolwiek perspektyw. Zrodzony z Węgierki dynasta popełnił w młodości jeden szczeniacki błąd. Zafascynowany religijnością niemieckiego cesarza Ottona III zdecydował się wstąpić do pustelni i odrzucić ziemskie pokusy. Szybko się otrząsnął, ale rozsierdzony Chrobry już się postarał, by ta pomyłka zaważyła na całym jego życiu.

O karierze Bezpryma właściwie nic nie słychać. W niemieckich tekstach co rusz pojawia się Mieszko. Dyskutuje z cesarzem, reprezentuje ojca, daje wyraz swojej ogładzie, a nawet popisuje się wysokim wykształceniem. Komentatorzy często nazywają go najstarszym synem Chrobrego. Wokół Bezpryma panuje tymczasem zmowa milczenia.
Najwidoczniej ojciec zupełnie odciął go od spraw państwa. Nie powierzał mu oddziałów zbrojnych, nie wysyłał go do sąsiednich krain. Pewnie nawet nie dopuszczał go przed swoje oblicze. To, co Bezprym zrobił jako czternastolatek, wciąż ciążyło na nim dwie dekady później.
Jeszcze przed II wojną światową historyczka Anna Pospieszyńska stwierdziła, że nieustanne krzywdy spaczyły psychikę Bezpryma. Zatarły w nim wszelką ambicję, zostawiając miejsce wyłącznie dla pragnienia zemsty. Jeśli tak było w istocie – jeśli Bezprym stał się zaledwie pustą, nienawistną skorupą człowieka – to stał się też idealnym kandydatem na buntownika. Mieszko tymczasem szybko dał mu pretekst do działania.
Chwała ojca
Bolesław Chrobry umarł w 1025 roku, a już w 1028 nowy polski król zarządził zbrojną wyprawę na Niemcy. Rocznikarz z Hildesheimu zapisał:
Mieszko napadł ze swoim potężnym wojskiem zbójecko na wschodnie połacie Saksonii. Dokonawszy podpaleń i łupiestw, pomordował wielu mężów, pojmał wielką ilość kobiet i uśmiercił niesłychanymi wprost mordami niezliczoną ilość dzieci. On sam i jego ludzie, zaiste będący wspólnikami diabła, srożyli się niezwykłą surowością okrucieństwa w krajach chrześcijańskich, na oczach Boga.
Znana jest data wyprawy – styczeń rzeczonego roku. Znane są jej szczegóły. Drużyna Mieszka uderzyła na Miśnię, w której rządziła znienawidzona siostra Piasta, Regelinda. Znane są wreszcie skutki ekspedycji, bo poza łupami Mieszko przywiózł też do Polski pojmanego biskupa Brandenburga, Luizona. Również nagłe przeniesienie innego biskupstwa z Żytyc do Naumburga historycy tłumaczą polskim zagrożeniem. Jeśli coś pozostaje tajemnicą, to tylko… przyczyny działań Mieszka.
Mieszko II szczerze nienawidził swojej siostry Regelindy. Najlepszym dowodem na to był fakt, że gdy tylko objął władzę od razu złupił rządzoną przez nią Miśnię. Na ilustracji gotycka figura przedstawiające Regelindę w katedrze naumburskiej (fot. Linsengericht; lic. CC BY-SA 3.0).
Wyprawa, mówiąc krótko, nie miała sensu. Nie przemawiały za nią żadne polityczne powiązania ani bieżące argumenty. Nie trwała wojna, a polski król nie bronił się przed jakąkolwiek agresją. Po prostu pewnego dnia zebrał armię i ot tak, bez uprzedzenia zaczął łupić ziemie sąsiada. Niektórzy badacze próbują wprawdzie bronić Mieszka, trudno jednak brać ich teorie na poważnie. W ich świetle Piast po prostu się… zagapił.
W Niemczech od jakiegoś czasu srożyli się przeciwnicy nowego króla Konrada II. Stronnictwo skupione wokół księżnej górnej Lotaryngii Matyldy starało się nawet o zawarcie sojuszu z Mieszkiem. Buntownicza fakcja poszła jednak w rozsypkę już w… 1025 roku! Wieść o tym przetasowaniu politycznym dotarła do Polski po dwóch, góra trzech tygodniach. Ale na pewno nie po trzech latach! Wprawdzie później w Rzeszy rodziły się jeszcze inne spiski, nie miały one jednak nic wspólnego z lotaryńską księżną. I żaden z buntowników nie zabiegał o wsparcie z Polski.
Miśnieńską awanturę trzeba tłumaczyć inaczej. Nie przez pryzmat politycznych argumentów, ale przyziemnych, ludzkich emocji. Mieszko, podjudzany przez spragnionych łupów żołnierzy, chciał za wszelką cenę udowodnić swoją wartość. Podjął się misji w równym stopniu szaleńczej, co zuchwałej. Spojrzał w paszczę lwa.
Dostrzegł, że ten wciąż drzemie, więc zasadził się na niego z kijem, powybijał mu kły i wrócił do domu, nim bestia otrząsła się z letargu. Wmówił samemu sobie, że broni honoru rodziny i daje zbrojny odpór potwarzom. W Niemczech głośno krytykowano jego koronację królewską. Nazywano Mieszka fałszywym królem, oszustem. I władca zamierzał z mieczem w dłoni uciszyć każdego, kto twierdził, że on, syn Bolesława, nie zasługuje na najwyższą sakrę.
Po objęciu władzy Konrad II musiał stawić czoła silnej opozycji, która szukała poparcia u Mieszka II. Najazd z 1028 roku nie miał jednak nic wspólnego z buntem przeciwko niemieckiemu władcy Na ilustracji Konrad II i jego potomkowie (źródło: domena publiczna).
Jeśli liczył na przekonanie Niemców, to osiągnął skutek odwrotny od zamierzonego. Teraz w Rzeszy widziano w nim już nie tylko uzurpatora, ale wręcz – narzędzie szatana. I Bezprym wiedział, że oto otwiera się dla niego jedyna w swoim rodzaju okazja.
Jad zawiści
Najstarszy i najbardziej poniżany z książąt swoją nienawiścią zatruł także trzeciego z rodzeństwa, Ottona. Można zgadywać, że Mieszko gardził tym bratem podobnie jak pierworodnym Chrobrego. Takie nastawienie do konkurentów odziedziczył już przecież po ojcu.
Dwaj dynaści domagali się większego udziału w rządach i poszerzenia swoich skromnych dzielnic. Każde z ich roszczeń spotykało się ze stanowczą odmową suwerena. Wreszcie cierpliwość Mieszka wyczerpała się. Skazał braci na banicję i pozbawił ich majątków. Bezprym i Otton nie wyruszyli jednak do Niemiec. Udali się prosto do… Kijowa. Bardzo możliwe, że kierowali się radami Przedsławy: ruskiej księżniczki i niewolnicy Bolesława Chrobrego, od lat przebywającej przymusowo w Polsce. Ta przebiegła kobieta była gotowa zrobić wszystko, byle wyrwać się z niewoli. Nawet zmanipulować dwóch książąt, rozbudzić w nich pragnienie zemsty i popchnąć do działania w imię jej własnej sprawy…
Jakkolwiek było, sytuacja szybko się skomplikowała. Niezorientowana w bieżących zajściach na Rusi Przedsława przeceniła możliwości i chęci swojego brata, wielkiego księcia Jarosława Mądrego. Sądziła, że ten z ochotą wypowie Mieszkowi wojnę, by odzyskać pograniczne grody zagarnięte przez Chrobrego i osadzić na polskim tronie wdzięcznego Bezpryma. Jarosław wcale jednak nie rwał się do walki. Akurat toczył wojnę domową z jednym z własnych braci i to ten konflikt angażował gros jego uwagi. Poza tym Rurykowicz nie wierzył chyba w łatwość wyprawy na Polskę. Bądź co bądź, Mieszko dopiero co z sukcesem najechał Saksonię, bezkarnie plądrując niemieckie pogranicze.
Wygnanie na wschodzie
Podkuszeni przez współkonspiratorkę bracia zostali na lodzie. Niemiecki kronikarz przyznał, że przez jakiś czas byli zmuszeni mizernie wegetować na Rusi, pozbawieni jakiegokolwiek wsparcia miejscowego władcy. Mieszko tymczasem odnosił kolejne sukcesy. Konrad II nie mógł zignorować poczynionej zniewagi. Wprawdzie jego myśli zaprzątały ważniejsze problemy, ale pychę Polaków po prostu trzeba było ukarać. W 1029 roku cesarz zwołał pospieszną wyprawę i uderzył na pograniczny Budziszyn. Oblężenie zdecydowanie nie potoczyło się po myśli imperatora. W rocznikach hildesheimskich zanotowano: Wielu zostało rannych i zabitych z obu stron. Cesarz, widząc, że nie zdoła pokonać swych przeciwników, zawrócił do Saksonii.
W 1029 roku Konrad II postanowił ukarać pychę polskiego władcy. Jednak wyprawa zbrojna poszła kompletnie nie po jego myśli. Na ilustracji podobizna Mieszka II autorstwa Wojciecha Gersona (źródło: domena publiczna).
To był już drugi pokaz siły polskiego króla. A przynajmniej: druga z kolei iluzjonistyczna sztuczka. W rzeczywistości Mieszko prężył muskuły, których nie posiadał. Państwo polskie znajdowało się od lat w głębokim kryzysie. Łupy zdobyte na Sasach pozwoliły podnieść morale, ale nie były w stanie zapełnić ziejącego pustką skarbca. Co znamienne, po 1025 roku Mieszko nawet nie próbował bić własnych monet.
Ruskie kroniki donoszą też o zamieszkach, które przetoczyły się przez kraj w następstwie śmierci Chrobrego. Jeśli młody król triumfował, to głównie dlatego, że Konrad pomylił się w swoich szacunkach. Na Budziszyn pociągnął z czysto symbolicznym oddziałem. Wcześniej dogadał się z pogańskimi Lutykami, zamieszkującymi północne Połabie. Ci czuli się na nowo zagrożeni polską ekspansją i chcieli raz jeszcze zawrzeć sojusz z cesarstwem. Zgodzili się nawet wziąć na siebie główny ciężar walk. Dopiero z czasem okazało się, że tylko rzucali słowa na wiatr. Pod Budziszynem nie stawił się ani jeden lutycki żołnierz. I cesarzowi zwyczajnie zabrakło wojsk potrzebnych do przeprowadzenia szturmu.
Konrad wycofał się, ale w żadnym razie nie złożył broni. Natychmiast zapowiedział, że ekspedycja zostanie wznowiona w kolejnym, 1030 roku. Tym razem na taką skalę, by porażka w ogóle nie wchodziła w rachubę. Wieści o potknięciach cesarza, o jego rosnącym zacietrzewieniu i składanych deklaracjach dotarły także na Ruś. I naprawdę dały Bezprymowi do myślenia. Skazany na banicję książę wiedział, że musi jak najszybciej nawiązać kontakt z cesarzem. Nie pojechał jednak do Niemiec osobiście. Zamiast tego wysłał swojego brata, Ottona.
Żebrak na niemieckim dworze
Najmłodszy z trzech polskich dynastów dużo lepiej nadawał się do roli emisariusza. Już samo imię dodawało mu splendoru. Bądź co bądź, jego ojcem chrzestnym był nie kto inny, jak tylko nieodżałowany Otton III. Trzydziestolatek zwyczajnie miał też dojścia. Może i nie znał cesarskich urzędników ani szambelanów, ale mógł uderzyć do kobiety uchodzącej za jedną z najwierniejszych popleczniczek Konrada II. Margrabiny Miśni, Regelindy. Dla Bezpryma była ona tylko siostrą przyrodnią.
Ojcem chrzestnym knującemu przeciw bratu polskiego królewicza, był sam niemiecki cesarz. Stanowiło to niezwykle istotny atut w negocjacjach z naszym zachodnim sąsiadem. Na ilustracji cesarz Otton III (źródło: domena publiczna).
Co innego dla Ottona. Oboje pochodzili z trzeciego związku Bolesława Chrobrego. I choć różnica wieku sprawiała, że niemal się nie znali – Regelinda wyszła za mąż, gdy Otton miał góra trzy latka – to mężczyzna mógł liczyć na naprawdę gorące przyjęcie na miśnieńskim dworze. Łączyła ich krew, ale też interesy. Relacje między polskim królem a margrabiną już od dawna były dalekie od poprawności.
Mieszko od lat nakręcał spiralę przemocy i nienawiści. Regelinda też zresztą nie zrobiła nic, by powstrzymać eskalację sporu. Teraz pragnęła odpłaty za krzywdy w takim samym stopniu jak królewscy bracia. Bez wahania wstawiła się za Ottonem u cesarzowej Gizeli. Ta z kolei szepnęła dobre słowo o polskim królewiczu samemu imperatorowi.
W efekcie udało się pominąć iście bizantyjskie procedury obowiązujące na niemieckim dworze. Zwykle petent, nawet wysoko urodzony, musiał chodzić ze swoją sprawą od Annasza do Kajfasza – czy też od jednego urzędasa do kolejnego – aż wreszcie, po całych tygodniach, ktoś decydował, że warto przekazać sprawę… o szczebel wyżej. Wszystko to wymagało tytanicznego wysiłku, tym bardziej że przecież dwór znajdował się w ciągłym ruchu. Często audiencja następowała dopiero po tym, jak upraszający o nią delikwent przebył w cesarskim orszaku setki kilometrów.
Ottonowi nie kazano aż tyle czekać. Do oblężenia Budziszyna doszło późnym latem. Jeśli królewicz opuścił Ruś po ustaniu jesiennej słoty, to do Miśni dotarł najpóźniej w lutym. Musiał w tym celu objechać Polskę szerokim łukiem. Zapewne podróżował przez Węgry i przez czeskie władztwo Ołdrzycha. Jego wędrówka wciąż jednak nie była zakończona. Możemy zgadywać, że po paru lub parunastu dniach wspólnie z siostrą opuścił marchię miśnieńską. Orszak margrabiny przemierzył wszerz całą Rzeszę, by wreszcie zatrzymać się w Ingelheimie nad Renem. To tam imperator spędzał w 1031 roku Wielkanoc.
Toksyczny pakt
Pośrednictwo Gizeli wystarczyło, by Konrad przynajmniej zechciał wysłuchać, co Otton ma do powiedzenia. A tym samym: zechciał zapoznać się z nowym projektem Bezpryma. Ten zdążył już sobie wszystko poukładać w swoim rozgorączkowanym umyśle. Oczywiście Jarosław odmówił samodzielnego uderzenia na Polskę… Co by jednak powiedział, gdyby do tej samej wojny włączył się także niemiecki imperator? Dwa potężne mocarstwa, Ruś i Rzesza, rozdeptałyby siły Mieszka niczym mrówki.

Każda strona zagarnęłaby to, na czym najbardziej jej zależało, ale cała reszta zostałaby dla Bezpryma. No może nie licząc kilku okręgów grodowych, które musiałby odstąpić Ottonowi… Trzeba tylko było przekonać dwóch władców do tego, że stoi przed nimi jedyna w swym rodzaju okazja. I że za sprawą wspólnego, skoordynowanego ataku najłatwiej osiągną zamierzone cele.
Nie ma się co dziwić, że ten projekt brzmi cokolwiek znajomo. Do pierwszego rozbioru Rzeczpospolitej wcale nie doszło w 1772 roku. Plany podzielenia Polski między sąsiadów ułożył już Bezprym i to przed końcem 1029 roku. Choć może trafniej byłoby nazwać ten osobliwy sojusz pierwszym paktem Ribbentrop-Mołotow. Z Konradem zamiast niesławnego ministra III Rzeszy i Jarosławem Mądrym w miejscu komunistycznego aparatczyka. Oraz, rzecz jasna, z Bezprymem, Przedsławą i Regelindą w tle.

Sądzę, że praprzyczyną była słabość państwa polskiego. Nienawiść osobista była tylko papierkiem lakmusowym tych zdarzeń.
A jeszcze podpis pod pierwszym zdjęciem artykułu nie Miszko II, a Mieszko II.

Ależ bił je. Może w mniejszym wymiarze niż ojciec, lecz czynił to. Widzimy je na rewersie banknotu dziesięciozłotowego. To nie są monety Mieszka I, tylko właśnie Mieszka II. To błąd, w literaturze numizmatycznej sprostowany już chyba ćwierć wieku temu, ale nadal w obiegu pokutujący.
Monety były bite 1000 lat przed Mieszkiem I znalezione zostały na statkach Wenedów, Francuscy archeologowie myśleli że należały do celtyckiego plemienia a pochodzą z Krakowa.
Owszem Mieszko II bił swoje monety, ale za życia Chrobrego, przed 1025 rokiem.

Pamiętam, jak w liceum na lekcji historii, gdy padły słowa, że Bezprym „odesłał koronę do cesarza”, klasa solidarnie jęła dawać wyraz swemu oburzeniu. Pan od historii rzekł „widzę i słyszę, że to z patriotycznych powodów”. Do dziś na wspomnienie Bezpryma reaguję podobnie, jednak mieszanie postaci z różnych epok jest ryzykowne.

Okres panowania pierwszych Piastów jest mi bardzo bliski.Takie artykuły jak ten niezmiernie cieszą moje oczy. Okazuje się, że o historii Polski można pisać inaczej, bez języka literatury suchych faktów. Pańska książka,, Żelazne Damy „jest według mnie jak mecz Realu z Barceloną.
